Queensland’s new land clearing bill will help turn the tide, despite its flaws

Queensland’s Labor government this month tabled a bill to tighten the regulation of land clearing. Queensland is by far the worst offender in this area, following a litany of reversals of vegetation protection.

Farming the Future: Chapter 7: Role of Government: 

Many farmers are testing and using different farming practices so their businesses are better able to withstand drought and other extreme events. However, this will not be sufficient to manage the future impacts of climate change, and farmers will need support and guidance to do this. The Australian Government‘s response to climate change adaptation in agriculture is therefore to focus on providing fundamental information and knowledge, and the decision support tools that will allow farmers and rural industries to manage the risks of climate change.

Australian farmers are adapting to climate change:

While rising temperatures have caused global wheat yields to drop by around 5.5% between 1980 and 2008, the effects in Australia have been larger, as a result of major changes in rain patterns. Declines in winter rainfall in southern Australia have particularly hit major broadacre crops (like wheat, barley and canola) in the key southeastern and southwestern cropping zones. There is strong evidence that these changes are at least partly due to climate change.

Adapting agriculture to climate change:

Agriculture is one of Australia’s most exposed industries to climate variability and extremes. Farmers have always managed for and adapted to a variable climate. This experience should benefit the industry in adapting to climate change.

Climate change: impacts and adaptation for agriculture in Western Australia:

Climate change is affecting Australia’s natural environment and the human systems it supports. Over the last 100 years, WA’s average annual temperature has increased by about 1 degree Celsius (°C). Rainfall has increased slightly in the north and interior but it has declined significantly along the west coast and in the south-west. A warmer, drier and more variable climate presents significant environmental, social and economic risks to WA. The agricultural sector is particularly exposed to climate variability and climate change.
